An excerpt from my album Sri Jagannathastakam. Jagannath Swami Nayana Patha Gami is a famous Sanskrit phrase meaning, "O Lord of the Universe, may You always be present within my vision".

An excerpt from my album Sri Jagannathastakam. Jagannath Swami Nayana Patha Gami is a famous Sanskrit phrase meaning, "O Lord of the Universe, may You always be present within my vision".

I thought I was taking my music to Lord Jagannath. I had no idea He would be the first to listen.

With Ratha Yatra approaching, I felt inspired to share one of the most sacred experiences of my musical journey.

The video is from a dance drama that I directed in 2007, where I portrayed Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in His intense separation from Lord Jagannath. The music is an excerpt from the Shri Jagannathastakam, which I composed and sang as my offering.
When the recording was complete, I carried just three master CD s with me to Jagannath Puri.

It wasn't made for release.
It wasn't made for promotion.
It wasn't even made for an audience.
It was simply a gift for the Lord.

During the Ratha Yatra, devotees were briefly allowed to climb onto Lord Jagannath's chariot. When my turn came, I knelt down and placed the CDs at His lotus feet with a heart full of gratitude.
Then something happened that I could never have imagined.

The panda serving Lord Jagannath picked up the CDs, gently pressed it against the Lord's ear, smiled, and said to me in Odia, "He has to hear it."

In that instant, tears filled my eyes.
I had come only to offer.

The panda then asked if he could keep one of the CDs. We happily left it there, never expecting to see it again.

Early the next morning, as I walked through the streets of Jagannath Puri, I suddenly stopped.
From the temple loudspeakers, echoing across the holy town, I heard my own voice singing the Shri Jagannathastakam.

I stood there in silence.
The Lord of the Universe had listened first.
Only then did He decide that others should hear it.

That experience transformed the way I look at every performance.

As artists, we often worry about audiences, numbers, applause and appreciation. But that day Lord Jagannath taught me something far more beautiful.
Our first audience should always be Him.

When our music becomes an offering instead of a performance, He accepts it in His own way and, if He wishes, shares it with the world.

Since that day, every concert I sing begins in my heart as an offering to the Lord. I simply sing. He listens.

Everything the audience receives afterwards is His prasadam.

This performance in Ladysmith was completely unrehearsed, accompanied by the wonderful local musicians of Prakash Orchestra. It wasn't preparation that brought me there, it was the warmth of their invitation and the love with which they welcomed me.

I don’t really have a song composed…
as a tribute to my dad.
Because… in many ways…
I am his song.
And today… on Father’s Day…
I want to share that journey.

From the time I was a little girl…
my father noticed that I had an interest in singing.
He didn’t ignore it.
He didn’t treat it lightly.
He nurtured it.
He protected it.

In those days in South Africa…
music was not understood as a profession.
But my father…
he saw something in me.
And he stood behind it completely.

I still remember…
his determination.
At one point… he even took me to meet Kishore Kumar…
simply to ask him… to listen to me sing.
Because we didn’t know the music world.
We didn’t have guidance.
But my father wanted me to be guided properly.
He wanted me to be understood.
That was the level of his belief.

My parents… always had pure intentions.
They never saw my singing as competition…
or comparison with others.
And I truly believe…
that purity shaped who I am today.

While I studied science…
and completed my Bachelor of Science degree…
my father never let my music fade.
He supported both worlds.
But music…
that was where his heart stood with me.

He personally took me for rehearsals.
He made sure I learned my songs properly.
My mother… supported from home…
even stitching my stage outfits with love and care.

Before I went to India in 1987…
my father had already begun opening doors for me.
He took me to meet people in the industry…
so I could learn… observe… and grow.
He didn’t wait for opportunity.
He created it.

My father was also a remarkable man in his own right.
He was an award-winning insurance agent with Pearl Assurance and the PRO of Berea FC.
But behind that… was a deep story of resilience.
He came from a family that suffered great loss early in life…
losing his father in the 1949 riots…
and growing up as an orphan.
Yet he rose…
with strength… dignity… and determination.

My dad was my only promoter.
He took me to newspapers himself.
He proudly introduced me…
“This is my daughter.”
He arranged interviews…
with publications like Post… Leader… Graphic.
There were no managers then.
No social media teams...
It was just him.

Even today, some people find it hard to believe that I brought this iconic star to Durban. Looking back at these photographs fills my heart with gratitude and joy.
What touched me most was not only her fame and her incredible achievements, but her warmth, humility and compassion. From the moment we met, she made me feel completely at ease. There was no air of stardom, no distance, just kindness, encouragement and genuine affection.
In many ways, it felt as though I had brought my own sister to Durban. She was so approachable, so supportive, and so generous with her time and words. Behind the glamorous screen presence is a woman of remarkable grace and humanity.
Thank you, Zeenat ji, for these treasured memories and for reminding us that true greatness lies not only in success, but in how we make others feel.

After a fruitful and inspiring two months in South Africa, I am now back in India with a heart full of gratitude and many exciting plans for the future.

This trip gave me so much insight into what is needed for growth in music, especially when it comes to teaching Indian music and voice culture in S.Africa.

For the first time in all these years, I opened my doors to South African students eager to learn voice culture and Indian music, and that is a truly rewarding experience.

Another highlight was being selected by SAMRO for a bursary to study the Music Publishing Programme conducted by the Music Business Lab (MBL) certified by Univ. of Pretoria. As a self-publisher for my label, Urja Music, this was an invaluable opportunity. I am proud to have been one of only 50 participants selected for the programme and to have graduated last Friday at Warner Music South Africa.

Winning the Hindi Essay Writing Competition organised by the Indian High Commission in Johannesburg was another special moment. It reminded me of the tremendous value my parents saw in learning Hindi and how lovingly they encouraged me from a young age. In fact, my essay was based on that very journey. Perhaps I should share it with all of you here as well.

I have never been one to speak much about my achievements. I have always preferred to stay focused on my work, quietly doing my bit while offering gratitude to my parents and, of course, to the Lord. Yet, during this trip, I realised that by doing so, I may also have overlooked sharing milestones that could inspire others or simply allow friends to be part of my journey.

This year marks 50 years since the late Kishore Kumar invited me to be part of his concert at Durban City Hall. It also marks 40 years since the release of my very first album of original songs, Sneha, recorded in Bombay and released on audio cassette.
And then I thought... why wait for a 50th anniversary celebration? Let us start celebrating now!

Over the coming weeks, I will be sharing memories, stories, photographs, music and reflections from this beautiful journey. Some will appear here, and some on my YouTube channel and facebook as well.

The Journey of a Song… “Maa” ✨
At Urja Music, my deepest passion has always been the creation of original music, songs born not from trends, but from emotion, experience and soul.
Two photographs take us back to 2018, when the journey of my composition Maa first began in Durban. I composed the melody to a beautiful poem by , and worked on the musical arrangement myself. During that time, I reached out to Rajive Mohan of House of Audio, who immediately connected with the song and enthusiastically began programming it with me.
But life moved quickly, and before we could complete the project, I had to leave South Africa.
The song remained safely stored away on my hard disk… waiting for the right moment to be born.

Earlier this year, while speaking to acclaimed Bollywood composer Sandesh Shandilya, known for unforgettable melodies like Suraj Hua Maddham and Aaoge Jab Tum , I played him Maa.
His immediate response was:
“This is a hit song.”
Those words reignited something within me.

As destiny would have it, I was once again in South Africa this April. I reopened the old project, contacted Rajive again, and said:
“We have to complete this song. Mother’s Day is coming… and Maa is waiting to be heard.”

Two photographs were taken last month in April 2026, and beautifully mirror the photographs from 2018 — the same creative spirit, the same musical bond, but now with time, growth and deeper emotion woven into the journey.
Some songs are not merely composed.
They wait patiently for the right time to arrive.
And now… Maa is finally ready to speak from the heart. ❤️

At Urja Music, my deepest passion has always been the creation of original music, songs born not from trends, but from emotion, experience and soul.
Two photographs take us back to 2018, when the journey of my composition Maa first began in Durban. I composed the melody to a beautiful poem by , and worked on the musical arrangement myself. During that time, I reached out to Rajive Mohan of House of Audio, who immediately connected with the song and enthusiastically began programming it with me.
But life moved quickly, and before we could complete the project, I had to leave South Africa.
The song remained safely stored away on my hard disk… waiting for the right moment to be born.

Earlier this year, while speaking to acclaimed Bollywood composer Sandesh Shandilya, known for unforgettable melodies like Suraj Hua Maddham and Aaoge Jab Tum , I played him Maa.
His immediate response was:
“This is a hit song.”
Those words reignited something within me.

As destiny would have it, I was once again in South Africa this April. I reopened the old project, contacted Rajive again, and said:
“We have to complete this song. Mother’s Day is coming… and Maa is waiting to be heard.”

Two photographs were taken last month in April 2026, and beautifully mirror the photographs from 2018 — the same creative spirit, the same musical bond, but now with time, growth and deeper emotion woven into the journey.
Some songs are not merely composed.
They wait patiently for the right time to arrive.
And now… Maa is finally ready to speak from the heart. ❤️

I had the blessing of singing at the Shree Gopal Hindu Temple in Verulam, Durban, South Africa… and it felt like singing into history itself 🙏
Built in 1888 by Indian indentured labourers working on the Mount Edgecombe Sugar Estate, this temple stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, faith, and cultural preservation.
In those early days, our forefathers gathered on the banks of the uMdloti River—building simple shrines from reeds and mud, singing, praying, and holding onto their traditions in a foreign land. Even when floods washed everything away, they rebuilt… stronger.
The temple later found its home in Temple Valley through land donated by Babu Talwant Singh, and grew into a sacred space for the community.
What makes it even more special is that Mahatma Gandhi himself visited Durban during that time and officially opened the temple hall in 1913—making this space part of a much larger historical journey.
As a South African artist of Indian origin, offering my voice in bhajan… felt deeply personal.
Because this was never just a performance.
It was a continuation of something that began long before us. ✨
